About the ATUQ

L’Association du transport urbain du Québec: The reference for public transportation in Quebec

The ATUQ represents the nine public transportation organizations in Québec that serve the major urban centres of the province: Montreal, Quebec City, Lévis, Laval, Longueuil, Gatineau, Trois-Rivières, Saguenay and Sherbrooke. Together, they provide over 90% of public transportation trips in Québec, which amounted to 558 million in 2013.

Mission

The ATUQ is a public and political consultation and representation organization, whose mandate is to promote public transportation and its member organizations as key players in sustainable development and mobility.

Vision

In support of one of the critical aspects of their common vision, the ATUQ and its member organizations strive to be recognized as essential participants in sustainable development and mobility, advocating a dedicated, indexed and recurrent funding of public transportation organizations.

Values

The ATUQ attaches the upmost importance to values such as collaboration, responsibility and thoroughness:

  • Collaboration
The ATUQ is a rallying point for the sharing of expertise. The association stresses the importance of fostering a spirit of collegiality inspired by mutual respect and consensus-based decision-making.
  • Responsibility
Within the context of sustainable development, the ATUQ and its member organizations are concerned about the impact their actions may have on the environment, society and the economy.
  • Thoroughness
Day in and day out, the ATUQ ensures the quality and consistency of its briefs and studies.

History

L’ATUQ is a non-profit organization created on November 3, 1983 by Mr. Antoine Grégoire, who was Director General of the Société de transport de l’Outaouais at the time. Mr. Grégoire passed away in January 2010.

L’ATUQ replaced the Association des commissaires du transport urbain du Québec, which was established in 1970. The creation of the new entity involved more than a name change; its objective was to reflect the new institutional framework for transportation organizations, which were now governed by boards of directors rather than by commissioners designated by ministerial decree.

Since 2001, the ATUQ has a permanent secretariat, whose headquarters are situated in Montreal.
