History

2013-2015
A comprehensive vision for building the RTL of the future
In 2013, the RTL implemented the first phase of its rapid transit network on boulevard Roland-Therrien in Longueuil. Inaugurated on August 26, 2013, the service saw a significant increase in ridership of over 9% in its first few months. This successful project earned the RTL and Ville de Longueuil the 2015 Grand prix d’excellence in the public transit category, awarded by the Association québécoise des transports (AQTr).  Lire la suite
2002-2012
RTL — a single corporation, a single city, a single agglomeration
The Réseau de transport de Longueuil (RTL) is incorporated on December 31, 2001, as a result of the Québec government’s municipal reorganization. The RTL’s territory corresponds to the “new” City of Longueuil, plus the borough of Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville.  Lire la suite
1985-2001
Development spurs a relaunch
A public transit network was implemented during this period, which quickly developed and reached a peak in 1989 with the construction of a third garage, the Longueuil Operations Centre, along with the acquisition of AG700 articulated buses.   Lire la suite
1974-1984
Nationalization of transport companies
The RTL was created on July 1, 1974, as the Commission de transport de la Rive-Sud de Montréal (CTRSM) following the nationalization of Chambly Transport. The CTRSM had 168 employees, 112 vehicles and 21 bus lines.  Lire la suite

Description

In 2022, the RTL is like the main transit provider on the territory of the Agglomération de Longueuil. It aims to become an integral part of citizens’ lives and the community by providing efficient and innovative solutions that will adapt to users’ transit needs in the evolving social, economic, and environmental context of the next ten years.

The RTL deploys 492 buses of various models, distributed in two operating centres located in Longueuil and Saint-Hubert.

With an objective of encouraging a sustainable mobility and the electrification of our network, since 2014, the renewal of our fleet of buses is carried out by the commissioning of vehicles with hybrid propulsion. An ecological initiative that contributes to promoting the well-being of citizens of the Agglomeration of Longueuil.

The Réseau de transport de Longueuil (RTL) buses serve five terminals. These terminals are located on the territory of the Agglomeration of Longueuil, but also in Montrea. This allows the RTL to better meet the needs of its customers who must travel to Montreal for work, studies or any other reason.
Locate the terminals on the map and click to obtain more information on the service being offered at each location.

 SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Sustainable development is in our DNA. Our public service plays a role in protecting the planet every day by transporting thousands of people. But more than that, we make a consistent effort to be environmentally friendly in everything that we do.

The RTL’s main contribution to saving the environment relates to the very foundation of its operations, namely the modernization and electrification of its buses.

But the RTL takes it one step further by doing a number of things every day to save the environment.

OUR REALIZATIONS

The RTL did not wait for sustainable development to be “in”. Its list of concrete realizations is impressive and certain exist for several years!
We encourage our employees
RTL employees are encouraged to drop their single-use masks in the recycling boxes located in our various buildings and garages. The masks are processed and turned into convertible materials by a specialized Québec firm and later used to manufacture new products. This initiative prevents the 10,000 procedure masks used each week by our employees from ending up in the trash.

Here are some examples of our recent achievements:

We recycle
Number of vehicle batteries recovered/recycled:
2018: 517
2019: 484
Number of tires recycled:
2018: 849
2019: 952Scrap metal recycled:
2018: 59,480 kg
2019: 132,165 kg

We’re changing our habits

Use of eco-friendly soap:

  • Use of eco-friendly soap in our bus wash system:
    • 2018: 1,025 L
    • 2019: 1,640 L
  • Use of eco-friendly soap to clean the insides of buses:
    • 2018: 615 L
    • 2019: 390 L

Going paperless:

The paratransit service has started digitizing its users’ paper files. In 2019, 15% of files were available in electronic format.
We encourage our employees
Charging stations are available to employees with electric vehicles:
Hours of use Number of uses Number of users
2017 3 175 695 15
2018 5 457 1 219 21
2019 9 691 1 781 51

Our bus fleet

The first electric buses will arrive over the next few months—another step toward the electrification of our entire fleet.

RTL’S 7 SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT PRINCIPLES

  • Improvement of the quality and the comfort of public transit services
  • Improvement of information tools for the customers
  • Initiatives in sustainable mobility
Protection of the environment
To achieve sustainable development, protection of the environment must be an integral part of the activities.
Some examples:
  • Programs to optimize the use of resources
  • Energy saving programs
  • Alternative propulsion modes
  • Use of alternative and renewable sources of energy
